Sand Art creations on San Diego Beaches
I’ve been creating sand art for over 2 years now and it’s truly a coalescence of a long career in illustration & graphic design set free! Who knew all the simplest things I love the most would come together and bring not only me the most joy but also a ton of other people too! Photos of my sand art have been shared all over the world! My favorite things: playfulness, barefoot in nature, creating happiness for people and in our communities, movement & dancing to good vibe music, being free, large scale art, my imagination running wild, and natures added bonus— none of it matters ’cause, “here comes the tide!” Honestly, if it were just me doing this by myself, it wouldn’t be this sweet — there’s got to be the component of making other people happy for it to really be everything for me.
I can honestly say, when I walk on the sand at low tide, an innate and undefinable areal spacial ‘knowing’ flows through me. I can actually ‘see’ from above me! Who knew! My companions are my one rake and my soulful intuition. The words I choose to write within my sand art, about 5 ft tall, are those I wish to share with our community and all who photograph and share. The love of hand written lettering began when I was 4 years-old while sitting on my green shag rug in Bethlehem, PA!
How long does an average sand art pieces take me to create? Usually less than 1 hour. I’m moving and flowing the entire time.
I begin with a circle and then add mandala like shapes, initially. Then my inspiration moves me outward across the expansive sand surface. I often dance as I listen to my favorite music. This all feels like a joyful primal expression of creative freedom to me. If folks passing by are curious, I have a few extra rakes for them to try out. It only takes a little good natured nurturing and guidance before they say “OK”. Witnessing their physical and emotional transformation unfold is another one of my favorite things. In just a few moments an “I can’t” becomes, “I loved this so much!” So many positive outcomes! Plus, this turns out to be a darn good work out too!
Sand art is beautiful to look at but also teaches lessons that ebb and flow into all areas of one’s life. How humbling — everything will be washed away with the high tide. The freedom of this knowing has brought out even more creativity in me! Plus, there’s nothing to be taken seriously! Even a dog or child running right through the art is a celebration of the “real real” while creating on the “canvas of life”! Gotta laugh.
Pick up a rake and head to the beach! Be playful. Dance. Stay for the high tide and smile as a part of you heads out to play with the sea for eternity!
